ToDo X: Metal
Here you’ll find detailed instructions on how to convert
ToDo X to the ‘brushed metal’ appearance preferred by some.
In order to do this you must be running
Mac OS X version 10.2 (Jaguar) or later, and you
must have the developer tools installed.
Please read the entire instructions before proceeding.
Note that
we do not endorse mucking around with the application’s interface,
and we would rather not find ourselves in the position of
fielding calls for help from people who have chosen to do so.
With that understood, let’s get started...
-
Quit ToDo X if it is currently running.
-
Make a backup of your to-do list in case something goes wrong.
(Refer to the FAQ if you don’t know
where it is stored.)
-
Find your copy of the ToDo X application and control-click on it
to pop up a context menu.
Select “Show Package Contents” from the menu.
-
In the resulting window,
open the Contents folder, then the Resources folder,
and finally the English.lproj folder.
You should see a file there named MainMenu.nib.
-
Double-click on MainMenu.nib
to open the file in Interface Builder.
(If this doesn’t work, chances are that you don’t have
the developer tools installed, in which case you’re out of luck.)
-
Among the other things
that will appear when Interface Builder launches,
you should see a window named ToDo that resembles ToDo X’s main window.
Click on the title bar of that window
and then select “Show Info”
from Interface Builder’s Tools menu.
The result should look something like the following,
with a MainWindow Info panel displaying window attributes.
-
Click the “Textured Window”
checkbox at the bottom of
the MainWindow Info panel.
(If no such checkbox appears in the MainWindow Info panel
then you are probably running an older version of Interface Builder,
in which case you’re out of luck.)
The ToDo window should change to the brushed-metal appearance.
-
Save your work, quit Interface Builder,
and you’re done.
A final word of caution:
if you do something wrong here, or if you go beyond these
instructions and make other changes to the interface, you can
quite easily cause ToDo X to crash.
Please do not redistribute a modified version of the application,
as this would be a violation of our copyright and would potentially
create a support nightmare for us if anything that you changed proves
problematical.
